The rise in temperatures in Spain is no longer an anomaly but a reality threatening public health. A study published in Nature Medicineย warns about the impact of extreme heat in Europe, identifying Barcelona, Madrid, and Valencia as some of the most vulnerable cities.

According to the research, by the end of the century, Barcelona could register over 246,000 heat-related deaths, while Madrid and Valencia could see 130,000 and 67,500 fatalities, respectively. Rapid urbanization and the use of heat-retaining materials exacerbate the problem, creating "heat islands" that increase risk.

To reduce the impact of extreme heat, it is crucial to implement effective solutions:

  • Green infrastructure: Parks and vegetated facades that absorb less heat.

  • Reflective materials: Pavements and coatings that reduce heat absorption.

  • Climate shelters: Air-conditioned public spaces for vulnerable populations.

  • Passive cooling technology: Innovative solutions such as reflective coatings that lower temperatures without energy consumption.

Extreme heat poses an increasing threat, but with the right strategies, cities can adapt and mitigate its impact. At Cooling Photonics, we develop advanced passive cooling solutions for urban infrastructure. Our focus on innovation and sustainability enables us to create solutions that optimize thermal management in urban environments, contributing to a more resilient and efficient future.
